Does anyone have any ideas on what one can do for the kickoff for the new theme this year?
We are a small church on a limited budget, but have about 18-20 regular GAs each week.
The girls are excited about the new year and I was looking for something to make it an awesome event.
Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What about having a homemade boat race in a kiddie pool?

I thought we'd send "messages in a bottle" for our kick off.  I'm going to print outlines of a bottle on card stock and cut them out.  The girls can write a message on the bottle and then we'll tie them to helium balloons and see where they land!  I haven't decided whether we're going to invite whoever gets the balloon to our church or let the girls ask whoever gets the message to write to her at our church address and invite them to attend our church.  Either way I think it will be a lot of fun and the girls will enjoy releasing a bunch of balloons.  I suspect the messages will end up in the right hands:-)

Speaking of message in a bottle...there is a great idea for this in the book "Zowie! 200+ Ministries Kids Can Do".  You can actually MAIL the bottle to someone.  Take a clean water bottle, remove the label and replace it with a colorful address label.  Write a letter.  Roll your letter so that it will fit thru the mouth of the bottle. Tie a ribbon around the middle of the letter and slide it into the bottle.  Then sprinkle some glitter, confetti, curled ribbon, etc down into the bottle.  Screw on the cap and tape it so it won't come off and then take it to the post office to getthe proper postage.
