The GA Leader book has an activity in Session 3 for the girls to make "Truth-teller Charm Bookmarks." Each girl is supposed to use a #1, star, person, heart and cross charm for their bookmarks. I've checked at Michael's, Hobby Lobby and online at Oriental Trading, and I haven't been able to find all of the charms or charms that aren't too expensive. Would either the writer of the lesson or someone who's found them please let us know where they are?
Thanks so much.

Sandy,
I am the writer. I am sorry that you haven't found the charms. I had several possibilities when I started and kept changing them so they would be ones I could find. All the ones I bought I got at Hobby Lobby. They were about 3 or 4 charms to a pack and I think they were maybe 1.99 each pack. I know that would be pretty pricey with a large group. You might consider changing it to a leather bookmark or bracelet. Then you could draw on them each symbol using markers or maybe stencils. Let me know if you come up with a more creative idea :-) The idea was mostly to tell the story that there is 1 God who created all things including people and He loves us enough to die for our sins on the cross. You could tell that story with a lot of different variations.

Thanks for the reply, Jenice. Since I wrote this, I searched online and found similar charms at Artbeads.com (star, cross, heart and #1), and a girl charm at A Charming Place.com. Although the charms were inexpensive, (.45-1.24 each), the total was close to 45.00 without the jump rings or lanyard clips. I really think this is an important activity, so I went ahead and spent the extra money. In case someone else would like these sources, you should be able to reach them with the urls above. If not, I'd be glad to go to the links and post them.
I thought about finding the images on Cricut cartridges and cutting them out of chipboard. Then they could be spray-painted with silver or gold, but I couldn't get answers from my scrapbooking group on who had the images in time to do it. That might work for someone else, too.
By the way, my girls loved dressing up and acting out the rich person/poor person Bible story last night. They really felt the impact of not being welcome. They also enjoyed "being" the letters in the Bible verse. I wasn't sure that would work out because of my non-readers, but with a little help, they had fun, too. Thanks for the good writing. The most important thing was the discussion that ensued after reading about Hinduism from the GA magazine. We didn't get finished with our lesson, but we certainly cleared up some misconceptions in our girls' understanding about being lost, Heaven, Hell and idols.
When my husband and I went to Singapore a few years ago, we saw firsthand the people offering sacrifices to idols, and it was just so shocking. The "priest" poured milk and honey over the statues, offered fruit and other foods to them, and the worshipers marked their foreheads with the ashes or colored powders provided. Wherever you went, you would see people who had been to worship by the marks on their foreheads. Seeing things like this helps bring our mission work to life.
Keep up the good work, and thanks for you reply.
In His love,
Sandy Nall

Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm sure those web pages will help others as well. My teachers came in my office Wed. night and asked me if I had the charms ready for them...I just groaned knowing what you had written and hoping our Hobby Lobby still had what we needed :-) I'll have to head over there tonight.
Thanks also for your comments on the lesson. Once in a while I get to see pics posted by groups who have done some of the activities or projects I suggested and read some comments from the leaders. It is always encouraging. I know how things go here with our girls but I usually don't get to know how it goes in other contexts. However God is so able to teach what each group needs to learn. I'm thankful your girls know Him better because of their time in GA. Thanks for all you do!

I had only a day or two to prepare for this activity. As someone who isn't crafty at all, I'm afraid this one is just going to be a little hard to pull off. I didn't even know what a lanyard clip was until I saw the picture in GA Leader. A hot plate and parrafin/candles are also called for? That worries me, especially with my younger girls. Unfortunately, all I have to work with is the leader book. I don't have a copy of GA World with me as I prepare, so I have the materials list, but no instructions. I wonder if we could just make a bookmark without the charms?

I understand your frustration. Some projects don't fit every situation or group. Let me recommend that you try an activity that answers the spirit of the activity and not necessarily the exact details. If you go to gapassport.com you can open up and look at the cards that go with the bookmarks. It shows each of the charms and what they mean. You might consider making a little booklet where they can draw each of the shapes and tell what it stands for: 1 is for the 1 God. The star is for the fact that God is the creator of the universe. The boy or girl figure is about making people and those people chose to sin instead of obey God. The heart is related to God's love for us inspite of our sin so He died on the cross which is the last charm.
Anything that you can do using those symbols would fit well in place of this craft. Another possible idea would be to put those shapes cut from foam or something or drawn on foam squares.and then punch holes in them and slide them onto a key ring shape or a ring binder clip.
I hope that helps you get some ideas going.

Hi, Ad,
I hope you found something that worked for you. I didn't use the hot wax for the same reason. We ended up using colored lanyard laces, and I let the girls choose whether to make a necklace, bookmark, bracelet or key chain. We also talked about them getting charm bracelets so they could wear them and use them to share about Jesus. They were really excited and loved the activity. We did this a couple of weeks ago, so I've been trying to reinforce the meanings of the charms each week and encourage them to learn how to use them to share.
In His love,

We had fun with it. I wasn't able to find charms, but I did find stickers for most of the shapes, and we cut a couple of the shapes out of foam. My girls just made bookmarks. I think they had a good time.
